Wee Waa is expected to experience major flooding for the rest of the week as a result of heightened water levels in the Namoi River.

The township itself has been isolated since the middle of last week, with road access to the town cutoff as a result of the flood.

Emergency services have been tasked with bringing in essential supplies for Wee Waa residents.

The Narrabri Creek was expected to peak at six metres on Monday night after major flooding occurred further upstream at Gunnedah.

The Namoi River peaked at 8.24 metres in Gunnedah on Saturday.

The Namoi River at Boggabri peaked near 7.80 metres on Sunday afternoon.

Downstream, the Namoi River at Bugilbone is likely to reach around 6.50 metres over the weekend, with moderate flooding. This is similar to the late November flooding in 2021.

The Namoi River at Goangra is likely to reach the moderate flood level (6.70 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Local emergency services have pleaded with members of the public to ensure they comply with road closed signs and do not drive through floodwater.

The impassioned plea follows a report in last Thursday’s edition of The Courier, which detailed several incidents where police said people were unnecessarily putting their lives at risk.

Among the recent incidents were people attempting to drive through floodwater on Turrawan Road and on Rangari Road, as well as people crossing the Violet Street bridge while it is closed.

Police also voiced concern about people walking on debris located alongside the Violet Street bridge.

If people require SES assistance, call 132 500. In an emergency, always call 000.
