The Mount Kaputar land snail and slug community has been added to the list of endangered ecological communities announced last week by Minister for the Environment Tania Plibersek in the government’s new 10 year native species saving plan.
Only known to be found in Mt Kaputar, it features the iconic Kaputar giant pink slug.
The pink slug is threatened by invasive animals (pigs), climate change and was extensively affected by the 2019 bushfires.
The feral pigs don’t eat the pink slugs – they tear up the ground cover which is the habitat of the slugs.
