The November 1939 Narrabri telephone book makes interesting, although brief, reading – there aren’t that many phone subscribers listed. The family names which are with us today were with us then. The Courier office had the distinction of having ‘number 1’ as the first phone number, followed by J.M McDonald, solicitor, 2, the Barwon Street stock inspector 3, the Caledonian Hotel 4, Dr A. J. Park 5, the Tattersalls Hotel 7. Shops were very service oriented – W.J. Foxe and Co. advertised their number 8 ‘phone day or night.’ Max Ginges, whose son Berel went on to achieve ‘Best and Less’ Fame was number 59.
