Khan Watson has lost his locks, all to raise money and awareness for a cause close to his heart – cancer.
The Narrabri West Public School student, who is the son of Kurt and Cigdem Watson, was surrounded by family and friends for his head shave in front of the Monterey Cafe last week.
Online fundraising, donations at the head shave and a raffle have raised close to $1800.
Khan is no stranger to losing his locks for a good cause, with a shave held in 2019 after his best friend died after a long battle with cancer. Both boys were eight-years-old at the time.
Now, Year 6 student Khan is even more determined to raise money for the cause.
At the time of Khan’s first shave, his nan was also battling cancer. She sadly died almost six months later.
“They were all really close to me,” Khan said of his best friend and his nan.
Cancer continues to impact Khan and his family, however, he is determined to create change and continue to raise funds towards cancer research.
Khan’s mum, Cigdem, said they were blown away by the support Khan had received during his second shave fundraiser.
“Narrabri is such a beautiful community,” she said.
“Khan is really passionate about the cause.”
Cancer continues to be a major concern across Australia, with an estimated 162,000 cases expected to be diagnosed this year. Cancer is estimated to cause almost 50,000 deaths this year, information from Cancer Australia shows.
The most recent Census statistics showed that 396 people in Narrabri Shire had listed cancer (including remission) as a long-term health condition.
