Narrabri’s junior sedans speedway sensation Wyatt Lawler will travel to Lismore this Saturday to compete for the Lismore Speedway RSA Junior Cup.
The 13-year-old is one of 10 junior drivers that have nominated to race in the event, and it will be his first time challenging for the cup.
Wyatt will go into the night quietly confident with great form on his side following a fast start to the 2022/23 speedway campaign.
He has lined up at three race nights so far this season and has claimed two feature race victories.
The first of those was during his first outing of the new campaign at the Morris Park Speedway in Dubbo back on Saturday, October 15.
He returned to the Dubbo track on Saturday, November 5, and was well and truly in the mix again after a P4 start in the feature following a DNF in heat one due to a flat tyre and then second-placed finish in heat two and a win in heat three.
He was battling for the victory with another driver for the first 12 laps of the feature, and with almost two laps two go, he hit the lead.
However, a race incident saw Wyatt hit the wall, which resulted in a last-place finish.
“That’s racing,” he said at the end of the night.
Wyatt shrugged that off two weeks later when he travelled to Sydney to race at the Eastern Creek Speedway on Saturday, November 19.
It was his first time racing at that venue after it had opened earlier this year, replacing the Sydney Speedway, which was formerly well known as the Parramatta Speedway.
The Narrabri boy was certainly not overawed by the grand stage as he placed third in heat one after starting out of P9 and then won heat two after starting out of P2.
He had another P2 start in the 15-lap feature race, which was the first for the junior sedans division at that track, and club officials described the battle for first as “superb” between Wyatt and Cooper Croker.
The two were fighting for the lead for the entire race, and it was Wyatt who held his nerve to win.
Fellow junior sedans driver Jake Smith rounded out the top three.
Wyatt said he thoroughly enjoyed the Eastern Creek Speedway and that he looked forward to racing there again.
His car has a slightly new look for the 2022/23 season, and he thanked his sponsor Barnes Refrigeration for their support of his racing career.
