Boggabri Lions Club members and guests enjoyed a Christmas party at the Boggabri Golf Club on Thursday evening.

“We have invited all the businesses and volunteers who have helped the club during the year and a big thank you to the Golf Club for hosting our Christmas party,” club president Craig Devine.

“Thank you to Whitehaven, Maules Creek and Boggabri Coal for thinking outside the square and allowing us to provide barbecues for their workers and at the same time distributing money back into community groups,” he said.

Many people are required to cook the barbecues, and being a small club, they realised that they would need help.

Instead of paying people to cook the barbecues, the Lions Club encourages volunteers to work on the barbecues, and then in return, the Lions Club pays the money the volunteer would earn into the volunteer’s chosen organisation or charity.

Volunteers earn their money as they must start work at 4.30am.

Organisations and charities which have benefitted from this arrangement include Sacred Heart School Parents and Friends, Boggabri Public School Parents and Citizens, Boggabri Hospital Auxiliary, Nurruby Day Care Centre, Boggabri Chamber of Commerce, Ooranga Pre-school, Boggabri Golf Club, The Tractor Shed, Men’s Shed, Rural Fire Service, Pony Club and the Showground Trust.

Boggabri businesses were also invited to attend the evening as suppliers to the club.

An astounding 13,920 meals were cooked in 2022.

During the floods, the club supplied meals to the coal workers who were travelling by helicopter to work.

The club has purchased a new barbecue trailer which they can use on-site at the mines or other venues where they cater.

However, most of the mine barbecues are cooked in the kitchen at the Boggabri Showground.

Next year the club is looking forward to welcoming new members as they continue to serve the Boggabri community.
