Sporting and outdoor precincts in Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri will be upgraded with $350,000 in funding from the NSW government’s Resources for Regions program.
NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway announced more than $350,000 from round nine of the fund had been awarded to the Narrabri Shire Council for the improvements.
Mr Farraway said the works would improve the facilities’ usability for local families.
“Our government has focussed on improving facilities in local towns in order to improve the livelihood of families living in the bush,” Mr Farraway said.
“This $350,000 investment will ensure that Narrabri, Wee Waa, Boggabri and other surrounding communities get to enjoy fantastic sporting facilities close to home.
“These investments play a huge role in connecting our community by bringing families and friends together. I am proud to be part of a government that is willing to deliver the projects that benefit our regional towns.”
Narrabri Shire mayor Ron Campbell said the funding would have positive flow-on effects for all members of the community.
“The funding provides direction to future-proof infrastructure for our shire for the benefit of locals, visitors, and tourists,” Cr Campbell said.
“These plans will provide pathways for inclusion in sport and recreation for people with disabilities and develop partnerships with clubs and community groups to review sport and recreational infrastructure to capitalise on their functionality and utilisations of 14 hectares of sporting fields, courts and open spaces.”
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said Resources for Regions had delivered 355 projects worth $560 million to mining communities since its inception in 2012, stimulating local economies and delivering critical infrastructure.
“The Resources for Regions program is about giving back to these mining communities that contribute so much to the NSW economy,” Mr Toole said.
“It’s absolutely crucial we continue to support regional mining towns that supply our state with the resources needed to keep the lights on and the economy moving forward, and this program is just another example of the NSW government’s commitment to the future of our mining regions.
“I would like to congratulate Narrabri Shire Council for putting forward these projects, which will make big difference for the people and organisations in this local community.”
Since 2012, Resources for Regions has supported economic and social prosperity in mining communities in regional NSW, with the $140 million Round Nine expanded to support communities where gas exploration or mining may occur.
The $560 million Resources for Regions is part of the government’s $3.3 billion Regional Growth Fund.
