Silver medal-winning Paralympian Taylor Corry will be welcomed to Narrabri Shire later this month as the Australia Day ambassador for 2023.

Taylor made her Paralympics debut in London at the 2012 games, winning silver in the women’s 200-metre freestyle and women’s 100-metre backstroke – both in the S14 division.

Growing up in Port Stephens, Taylor, now 27-years-old, started swimming in 2004.

At the 2009 National Underage Championships, she won three gold medals and two silver medals before competing in the 2010 Australian Short Course Championships.

Leading up to the 2012 Paralympics, Taylor competed in championships throughout 2011 and set a world-record for her classification in the 50-metre multi-class backstroke at the Australian Short Course Championships.

Taylor made her world debut at the Global Games hosted by Italy in 2011 and she won eight gold medals and one silver.

Her swimming highlight came at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games held in London.

Taylor went on to compete at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal in 2013 and won bronze in the women’s 200-metre freestyle in her class.

She went on to win bronze at the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow.

While scoring excellent results, Taylor was unfortunate to miss a spot in the 2016 Australian Paralympic team which competed in Rio de Janiero and in the team for the para-swimming championships in 2017 which were later cancelled due to an earthquake in Mexico.

Taylor returned to the world stage, claiming bronze in the mixed four 400-metre freestyle in the S14 class alongside teammates at the 2019 World Championships in
Doha.

Taylor will be welcomed to shire Australia Day festivities on January 26.

Members of the community areinvited to meet her at celebrations in Wee Waa, at breakfast, and Narrabri at a time to be confirmed to be held at the Narrabri Aquatic Centre.
