A cheque to cover the purchase of more than $900 worth of equipment for the proposed Narrabri High School radio station was handed over to the school last night.

The cheque was presented by the president of Narrabri Lions Club Mr Dick Simmons, to the school’s music teacher Mr Gilbert Beveridge.

The school intends to establish a fully-equipped broadcasting studio, which will eventually be run by the students, under Mr Beveridge’s direction, as an adjunct to other school courses.

The students will be involved in announcing, interviews, surveys, radio programing, music specials, advertisements, jingles, scripting of plays and serials and background music.

The station, to be known as Radio NHY, will be similar to student radio stations established in a few other secondary schools in the state.

Mr Beveridge has spent about 12 months in background preparation for setting up Radio NHY – including six days studying the running of the Coffs Harbour student radio station, Radio CHY.

The school received a donation of $300 from Narrabri Rotary a few months ago, enabling it to buy two turntables, two pick-up arms, two cartridges, a speaker and a microphone.

The Lions Clubs donation will allow the following items to be purchased – two horn speakers ($104), 200 yards of cable ($106), speaker and transformer ($69), amplifier ($125), second hand mixer console ($100), microphone ($80), stand ($15), 50 cassettes ($100), sound effects and themes, records to the value of $100 and minor electrical parts ($50).
