Wee Waa Fire and Rescue responded to reports of an electrical fire at a Wee Waa supermarket on Monday afternoon.

The crew was paged to the incident at 5pm and were at the scene in five minutes.

Firefighters found the Wee Waa IGA staff had evacuated all staff members and customers from the shop.

The officer-in-charge spoke to the senior IGA staff member to gather information to locate the fire.

Crews in breathing apparatus entered the store and located smoke issuing from underneath the row of freezers.

Fire and Rescue utilised its thermal imaging camera to locate the source of the fire and isolate all power to the freezers.

The crew was able to find the fire in the electrical component box and used a CO2 fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames.

Wee Waa Fire and Rescue Captain Bruce Cowan said the quick thinking of staff calling 000 prevented any major damage and to have all staff and customers evacuated from the store to safety.

“Once the fire was extinguished, crews checked for any further heat, smoke and gasses which none were found,” Capt Cowan said.

“The site was handed back to IGA staff to remove all the products from the freezer to other freezers, and our crew returned to station.”
