The extensive community involvements of Joan Griffiths, of Narrabri, were celebrated at a Seniors Festival morning tea at The Crossing Theatre on Wednesday morning.

Mrs Griffiths was named the Senior Citizen of the Year and was among five nominees for the shire honour.

The award presentation coincides with the state’s annual celebration of seniors and recognises community service.

Mrs Griffiths is actively involved in many organisations and is respected throughout the community for her passion and willingness to help organisations and people in need.

Mrs Griffiths is a valued member of the Narrabri Dementia Friendly Town Committee.

She provides empathy and support to others by sharing her knowledge from her own life experience.

Mrs Griffiths is also involved in Narrabri Parkrun and encourages everyone – young and old – to improve their quality of life.

Volunteering with Narrabri Meals on Wheels as well as involvements with the carers morning tea group and Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group are among her list of contributions to the community.

The community contributions of award nominees Ron Lowder, of Wee Waa, Roger Hollingworth, of Boggabri, and Margaret Hallett and Tricia Hadley, both of Narrabri, were also celebrated at The Crossing Theatre function.

Mayor Ron Campbell congratulated Mrs Griffiths and presented her with her award. He also thanked the award nominees for their dedication to their respective communities.

“Our seniors are a valued asset to our shire, and without the contribution of so many of you who are here today, many organisations would not be what they are,” he said.
