Wee Waa has warmly welcomed registered nurse Mikala McSaveney to the town’s hospital.
“I’ve been here since November and will be staying until April at this point,” Mikala told The Courier.
“It’s a beautiful and inviting community, people really make you feel included,” she added.
“I’ve been staying at the doctor housing – it’s so nice, better than being at home.”
Mikala is originally from the Sunshine Coast but has seamlessly made the transition from the beach to the bush for a few months before heading overseas to explore Europe.
“I have Aboriginal cultural heritage and a lot of my mob are from Goodooga,” said Mikala, when asked about her inspiration to work in the North West.
“I’ve been a registered emergency nurse for eight years,” she said.
“It has been a really good career choice.
“My mum is a nurse too, a midwife.”
Mikala said she has expanded her skillset while working in a nurse-led country hospital.
“It’s forced me into doing more assessments, that I previously wouldn’t have had experience in.
“You take on roles and responsibilities because there isn’t a doctor here all the time.
“The staff here are extremely supportive, and very willing to give me time.”
Nursing can be a rewarding yet tough career path but it’s one Mikala is pleased she followed because of the fulfilment she gets from assisting people in need.
“It sounds cheesy but it’s all about being able to make a difference,” she said.
“I want to try to make someone’s day just a little bit better.”
Mikala has also had the opportunity to visit some of the region’s tourist attractions and has a few more on her to-do list before she heads overseas.
“I’ve been out to the sandstone caves, to the pottery place, and Yarrie Lake was beautiful to see.”
