Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Ron Campbell presented Narrabri resident Joan Griffiths with the prestigious 2023 Senior of the Year Award at a seniors morning tea held at the Crossing Theatre on Wednesday, February 8.

Alongside Mrs Griffiths, nominees were Ron Lowder, Roger Hollingworth, Margaret Hallett and Patricia Hadley.

Mayor Ron Campbell welcomed guests to the 2023 Seniors Festival morning tea and award ceremony.

“We hope that the range of activities being offered across the shire throughout this year’s festival will provide opportunities for you to enjoy and celebrate with family members, friends, and others in the community,” said Cr Campbell.

“Today’s morning tea is a great example of a social gathering bringing people together and it is Narrabri Shire Council’s way of thanking you, for all that you do for our community.”

“The Seniors Festival provides an opportunity to publicly acknowledge all those that give so much to their community.”

Five nominees were selected ascontenders for the 2023 title.

Patricia Hadley was nominated for her tireless and extensive work in Narrabri and district.

A dedicated and compassionate member of the community, Mrs Hadley is involved in many organisations, including the Parkinson Support Group, the Rotary Club of Narrabri, and the Narrabri RSL Sub-branch.

Born and bred in Wee Waa, Ron Lowder is widely involved in the Wee Waa community and the broader Narrabri Shire.

He is a passionate, knowledgeable, and proactive advocate of the district.

Mr Lowder is involved in various organisations including the Wee Waa Rugby League Club, Wee Waa Show Society, Wee Waa Lions Club and is a volunteer firefighter.

Margaret Hallett has volunteered for most of her life. She’s been described as a caring and dedicated person who is always willing to help community members.

A significant part of Margaret’s life has been spent volunteering at 2MaxFM local community radio station, broadcasting on air for 22 years and holding her current position as
treasurer for the past 10 years.

Roger Hollingworth is a large contributor to the Boggabri community. Involved in many organisations, Mr Hollingworth has given his time to the Northwest Pig Marketing Co-Op, the

Boggabri Swimming Club, and the Boggabri Lions Club, to name just a few.

Cr Campbell was honoured and delighted to announce Joan Griffiths as the winner of Narrabri Shire Council’s 2023 Senior of the Year Award.
Mrs Griffiths volunteers in many organisations.

She is a valued and hardworking member of Narrabri’s Shared Table.

She provides empathy and support to others by sharing her knowledge from her own life experiences, particularly in relation to Narrabri Carers’ and Caring Group.

Mrs Griffiths’ involvement in the Narrabri Parkrun is welcomed as she encourages those young and old to improve their quality of life.

Additionally, Joan is part of Meals on Wheels, the Carers Morning Tea group, Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group, and an avid supporter for family and carers of dementia sufferers.
