Specialised Civil Services is on the hunt for an apprentice and it’s an opportunity Tommy Nolan could not recommend highly enough.
“I love the variety of the job,” said the third year heavy vehicle diesel mechanic apprentice, who loves how no two days are ever the same at SCS.
“I think that’s the best part about it, you’re always doing something different,” said Tommy.
“There’s so much you can learn and do, and so many different things you can work on.
“It’s a really satisfying job: you get to see something when it comes in broken, then you get to rebuild it, and then you see it go out the door – it’s always a good feeling when it’s ready to go out the door.”
Specialised Civil Services operations logistics manager Chris McClure said the Narrabri-based family-owned and operated civil construction company has a fantastic opportunity for a motivated school-leaver or young person looking to kick-start their career in the heavy diesel mechanic industry.
“We offer a permanent position on a lifestyle friendly Monday to Friday roster,” said Chris.
“It’s a family-owned earthmoving and haulage company, offering competitive hourly rates and a chance to learn lifelong skills and abilities.
“What you will learn through this job, you can apply to other walks and areas of life – anybody who learns how to work on machinery can work on anything.
“It’s a chance to learn about and work on a wide range of haulage trucks, prime movers and a large fleet of various earthmoving equipment including bulldozers, excavators and graders.”
Mr McClure said no experience is required but a keen and enthusiastic attitude is essential.
The successful applicant will also get to work alongside a professional team with a wealth of experience.
“There’s plenty of knowledge to share here, they will be immersed in the environment and will learn a lot,” said Chris.
For Tommy Nolan, another highlight of the job is working in such a diverse region with traditional, new, and growing industries.
“There’s an endless amount of things that need to be worked on, especially with the way the world is going in terms of everything becoming electric,” said Tommy.
“It’s always changing, so you’re always learning something different because there’s always something that needs fixing.
“I like that it’s a challenge too – there’s a lot of problem solving, there’s no way around it but to fix it, you can’t just leave something and walk away from it.
“Every day there’s a challenge, so you need to work it out and get it going.”
Tommy said he would strongly encourage people to follow in his footsteps and apply to work as an apprentice in a very rewarding industry.
“It’s a big step up, and you can feel like you’re stepping out of your comfort zone but there are a lot of skills that you will come away with, it’s not just about being a mechanic – you will learn how to figure things out on your own and you will learn people skills too.”
Specialised Civil Services has been serving the community since 2002, and the 100 per cent Australian family-owned company is a big supporter of local charities, schools, sporting clubs and business.
