Three inspirational women shared their life experiences, the challenges they have overcome and their passion for social justice at Narrabri Shire’s International Women’s Day breakfast.
Guests-of-honour Sara Palmer, Kate Briggs and Loreza Calalo Manalo addressed the crowd gathered inside The Crossing Theatre auditorium for the council-hosted event on Tuesday morning.
Each of the women had a powerful story to tell, bringing tears to the eyes of many in the audience when speaking about the adversity they have experienced.
Kate was the first to address the breakfast gathering and continues to be a strong advocate for her community making a difference to people’s lives by providing affordable housing for Aboriginal families in Narrabri.
She has a great connection with and respect for the beautiful Gomeroi country – the incredible environment and landscapes that surround Narrabri and the open sky.
Kate believes these is no place like home and wants to cherish this place for the future generations.
Sara followed and delivered a powerful message about social justice.
In her advocacy work, Sara ensures that the voice of people living with a disability is heard and is central to decision making in all areas of their life.
Sara spoke from lived experiences as a carer to her disabled daughter Davinda.
Living with a health condition or disability often means families and carers may have to make small or large adjustments to the way they live their life.
Sara raised examples of the many adjustments and considerations needed when caring for someone with a disability.
She spoke with true passion, particularly for her family, however, ultimately is driven for better human rights for all.
Sara is a natural and self-titled “fixer”, one of those people who are born to problem solve and lend a hand, especially to those that may need a little extra support.
Sara currently holds a position on the council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee and spoke about the recent accessibility tour conducted across the shire.
Rounding out the guest speakers, Loreza spoke about supporting family in the Philippines while building a new life in Australia.
She moved to Australia to work in nursing while supporting her three children who were under the care of her mother in the Philippines.
Similarly, Loreza has overcome her own experiences of adversity and has built a successful life in Australia.
Prior to the speeches, Narrabri Local Aboriginal Land Council chief executive officer Lynn Trindall delivered an acknowledgement to country.
A question-and-answer session was conducted by the breakfast’s master-of-ceremonies Ali Smith and Katie Watson at the conclusion of the speeches.
