Women from across the Wee Waa district enjoyed a glorious start to International Women’s Day on March 8 with pilates, breakfast, and fabulous company at the lush Rose Street gardens.

“We’re extremely happy with how the morning went,” said organiser Kayla Nehrkorn, community development officer for Narrabri and District Community Aid Service.

“I was guessing between 20 to 40 people would register but we had over 55 people register.

“It blew my expectations, and it reminded me how good the Wee Waa community is – everyone comes together to celebrate something.

“One of the ladies here just commented how it was so good to have something like this in our small town, so that’s great to hear.

“Jess from Little House on Rose has been amazing and so has Georgie Hamblin from Quest pilates, and I hope this has opened up more opportunities.”

The free event gave local women of all ages the opportunity to take time out of their busy morning routines and do something for themselves: rolling out a pilates mat, stretching, practising mindfulness, and then catching up and meeting new people over a delicious breakfast.

“I wanted people to feel comfortable to come along, and also to feel comfortable bringing their kids and that’s why I had bubbles and bits and pieces for the kids too.

“Men were also more than welcome to come.

“I thought about doing speakers and then really just wanted to create a beautiful morning with social interaction for people to come together.

“And it has been such a beautiful morning.”

Pilates instructor Georgie Hamblin was overwhelmed by the number of attendees and their enthusiasm, with women travelling from Narrabri and Burren for the early morning session.

“It was very special; I couldn’t believe it,” said Georgie.

“It’s so important we all take time to move our bodies so we can feel good within ourselves, and something like this out in the open air, on the grass – I just think it’s great.”
