Eileen Scriven of Milton in the South Coast was 2023’s Royal Easter Show overall winner taking out the top prize in cake decorating.
The stunning three-tier wedding cake was inspired by the royal wedding cake of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip made in 1947.
Narrabri local cake decorating expert Janice Smith was one of three stewards invited to take delivery and judge the cakes over the course of two days.
“The cake, using royal icing, displayed lace handmade cherubs and flowers using many advanced cake decorating techniques,” said Mrs Smith.
“Judging is anonymous, and we never know who the cakes have been decorated by, they are simply displayed with a number.
“All entries are given a QR code and entered electronically before we receive them, then the entry is checked for size and that they comply with the schedule.
“If an entry does not comply, it is disqualified.
“After all entries are received the stewards arrange the cakes in the display cabinet ready for judging to commence.
“We were thrilled to announce Eileen Scriven’s entry as overall winner, as the techniques used were extremely clever, complemented by the nostalgic theme.
“Many of these traditional techniques are gradually being lost as they are no longer taught.”
