On Saturday, June 24 local personalities will dance for cancer at The Crossing Theatre.

Money raised from the event will go towards Cancer Council NSW and its world-class cancer research, prevention programs, advocacy, and support services.

Stacey Dunn, Louise Tout and Nikki Shields

The girl trio decided to Dance for Cancer to help raise awareness and promote the importance of early detection.

About us: The Triple Ds are at the core, good mates sharing the highs and lows of life as witty, intelligent, and good-looking humans. Nikki (group leader) is a Queensland rock eisteddfod champion, while Stacey is a veterinarian and Louise is a CEO.

Our Stars’ experience: With Nikki being a rock eisteddfod champion, we have zero worries, as the dance is in the bag. The fundraising was our focus and we have nailed it and had big support from the community.

Our performance in three words: Nikki – resilience, Stacey – hamstring, Louise – wobbly.

Ben Duncan

Ben Duncan.

Ben is dancing for a cancer-free future!

About me: I was born and raised here in Narrabri. I finished my schooling at Narrabri High School before moving to Newcastle to study teaching. After finishing my degree I moved back to Narrabri to work at the same school I attended. I love this town and want to give back for everything it has done for me.

My Stars’ experience: So far, it has been amazing. My dance teacher Sarah is so talented and makes the experience so enjoyable. It’s a challenge, but if embarrassing myself for five minutes raises awareness and funds for such a noble cause, I don’t mind.

My performance in three words: Funny, journey and energy.

Fiona Redfern

Fiona Redfern.

Fiona decided to dance to help the one-in-two people diagnosed with cancer.

About me: I am a 47-year-old wife of one, a mother of two. I’m the practice manager at Bridge Medical Centre and in my spare time, I like spending time with family and playing sport within the community.

My Stars’ experience: The experience has been a lot of fun. I can’t believe the generosity of the people of Narrabri. I’ve enjoyed pushing myself to get the dance down and committed to memory. Sarah and my dance partner have also made the experience extra special.

My performance in three words: Fast, energetic and sassy!

Mitch Creighton

Mitch Creighton.

Mitch has been inspired to get out of his comfort zone and dance after witnessing his mum’s courageous battle cancer.

About me: I’m 32 years old, a father of three young boys. I work at Specialised Quarries Concrete, here in Narrabri. I’m a front rower for the Narrabri Blue Boars, and a lover of the dance floor.

My Stars’ experience: This has been such a fun way to raise some money and I am thoroughly enjoying every moment of it. The girls at the dance studio have been very patient and accommodating.

My performance in three words: Show-stopping production masterpiece.

Karen Kirkby

Karen Kirkby.

Karen has joined the Dance for Cancer as a cancer survivor and to help the Cancer Council continue to provide support services for those affected by cancer.

About me: I work with the Department of Primary Industries Australian Cotton Research Institute at Narrabri. Two and a half months ago, I could hardly walk with bone pain – a side effect caused by my hormone-blocking medication. I have changed the medication and am relatively pain-free, which means I can dance.

My Stars’ experience: I am loving the fundraising experience and the dance lessons. It is somewhat hard when another side effect of my chemotherapy treatment is no short-term memory.

My instructor Lauren Grant has been wonderful.

My performance in three words: Inspiring, meaningful, and hope.

Kylie Browne

Kylie Browne.

Kylie is dancing for her mother and mother-in-law, who both lost their battle with cancer, and to help the Cancer Council provide more resources like the NSW Inala House.

About me: I am an advertising consultant at The Courier newspaper and have lived in Narrabri for 22 years. I love coffee, country music, crafting and photography. I also love spending time with my daughter and husband.

My Stars’ experience: So far it has been a lot of fun. Thanks to my dance partner Ethan and dance teacher Kim. We’ve had so many laughs during practice.

My performance in three words: Tells a story.

Brett Dickinson

Brett Dickinson.

Brett wants to make a stance and dance to raise funds to support and help the thousands of people cancer affects. “Let’s take a chance to make a difference in someone’s life!”

About me: I am a local councillor and drive the school bus between Narrabri and Gunnedah each day, and I was suggested for this by Mayor Ron Campbell. My daughters and I lost my wife Renee in 2011 after a nine-month battle with cancer, so to be a part of this fundraiser is very close to my heart.

My Stars’ experience: I’m someone who used to enjoy a jig on the dance floor, though time is not my friend and three minutes is now a long time to strut your stuff on stage. My dance partner and friend Sarah Gleeson has been a great support in making this three-minute adventure possible. I still imagine that come Sunday, I won’t be able to walk.

My performance in three words: Two left feet comes to mind or putting myself out there.

Terrence Duncan

Terrence Duncan.

After thinking about how many people are affected by Cancer, Terrence wanted to get up, have a go and bring some much-needed help and support to a great cause!

About me: I work with Santos, am 55-years-old, 28 years married to my very patient wife, and have two wonderful sons. I love participating in sports, but nowadays I mostly spectate. I have two left feet and zero rhythm, so I will probably need an ice bath after this competition!

My Stars’ experience: It has been fun. Lauren and Paige have been great, but I think they have bitten off more than they can chew, trying to get me looking at least a little coordinated.

My performance in three words: Have you ever seen a newborn giraffe trying to stand for the first time? So, I’d say, “newborn giraffe.”
