Former Narrabri resident David Anthony, a prominent figure in the Australian cotton industry and cotton communities for many years was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (AM) ‘for significant service to the agricultural sector, and to the community of Narrabri.

Mr Anthony achieved leading positions in many industry organisations and corporate entities, the agricultural science research community, government advisory bodies and cotton associated agricultural industries.

His long career, from the early days of the cotton industry, spanned his chairmanship of Auscott, and close involvement with water and biosecurity agencies as CEO, chairman and directorships which saw him engaged in cotton regionally, nationally and internationally.

Mr Anthony was a well known Narrabri identity during his tenure at Auscott, engaged with his wife Pru in many community activities and organisations.

He and Pru now live in Turramurra.

In Narrabri his community activities included APEX and soccer coaching and refereeing.

In the wider community sphere he was a member of the Australian Garden History Society and a member of the Historical Houses Association.

Mr Anthony’s involvement as a leader in the cotton industry spans generations of huge growth and change in the industry.

He was a key participant in that era of progress, innovation and challenges, with senior roles in the major industry organisations as the scale and complexity of the cotton industry grew.

Mr Anthony chaired or was a major participant in the Australian Cotton Growers Research Association, the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, Cotton Catchment

Communities Co-operative Research Centre, chairman of Auscott, a CSD board member, a director of Cargill, chairman of Tocal Agricultural College, and government auspiced water and biosecurity bodies.
