It was almost standing room only at Boggabri Golf Club earlier this month on Sunday, August 6, during the local club’s annual open day.
The club house was buzzing with 63 players along with supporters and helpers.
Outside, more than 30 golf carts were lined up ready to go, and in the car park, a lonely bus was surrounded by cars.
The local Boggabri committee was pleased to welcome Longyard club’s Harry McKerrow who is the secretary/treasurer of the Central North District Golf Association, to their event.
The Gunnedah club provided the largest number of players and they even had to hire a bus for the day.
Other players came from Narrabri, Barraba, Manilla, Walcha, Werris Creek, Muswellbrook, North Ryde and Longyard to join the Boggabri locals.
Guy Gallan once again was the major sponsor and he was very excited with his newly-painted sign at the first tee and the incredible number of golfers who had turned up on the day.
A familiar face behind the barbecue was Roger Matthews, who certainly had his work cut out feeding the large number of keen golfers, as did Sonya Mosely, who was behind the bar with the important job of keeping players hydrated.
The lady golfers as always provided a beautiful meal which once again was much appreciated by the players.
Boggabri is full of good stories and surprises, and the local golf club’s 2023 open day was no exception.
Many people will remember David Casey, the principal of Sacred Heart School for several years and was the president of the golf club back in 1993.
He now plays golf at North Ryde but made his first visit to play in Boggabri since leaving town 30 years ago.
He did not have a partner and was paired with Daniel Grice-Pym, who had played on the Saturday and had returned a score of 42 points.
At the 2023 open day event, the duo were introduced for the first time and went on to become the nett winners on 49 points.
Word has it that David will be back to defend the title with Daniel next year.
