A highlight of Friday’s observance of three significant milestones in Australia’s history was the contribution from the young representatives of four Narrabri schools.
Friday was a day of solemn commemoration – and celebration – as the community marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, Victory in the Pacific Day and the 100th anniversary of Legacy.
Speakers from Narrabri High School, St Francis Xavier’s, Narrabri West Public and Narrabri Public schools presented confident and well researched addresses on war, the ongoing care for the families of those who have fallen or been injured by war and offered a prayer for the nation.
The audience at Narrabri RSL War Memorial was impressed by the young speakers and the delivery on their topics.
The annual VP Day commemoration was especially profound this year with the occasion also marking the half century since the Vietnam War ended and the century of service by Legacy to families which have suffered as a result of wars.
The proceedings were led by MC Sally Phelps, treasurer of Narrabri RSL sub-branch, standing in for sub branch president Gary Mason OAM.
A feature of the ceremony was an address by the principal of Rowena Public School, Jo Glazebrook.
Mrs Glazebrook is a member of a family which lost their ex-serviceman father and husband and has been supported and mentored by Legacy.
The depth of Legacy’s support for her family was emphasised by Mrs Glazebrook. Legacy stepped forward to help, and continued to help, the family in its immediate hour of need and beyond.
Legacy’s support, with its origins in World War I, has been extended to families of service people for the past century.
“We say ‘thank God for Legacy’,” said Mrs Glazebrook.
