Wee Waa Bowling Club’s mother and son team of Renee and Zack Doring have won their way through to Bowls NSW’s 2023/24 season State Champs finals in the Reserve Pairs division.

The Dorings travelled to Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club where they played four matches across the past weekend in the Zone 3 playoffs.

They qualified to compete at that event after they downed clubmates Brett Pillar and Hunter Doring in the only sectional game in the division at Wee Waa on Saturday, August 12.

Sectional games were also played at Bingara, Inverell, South Tamworth, Werris Creek, Lightning Ridge and Uralla that weekend, with the eight winning teams progressing through to the zone playoffs.

The eight teams were split off into two sections of four, with the Wee Waa team placed alongside Uralla’s Stephen Vanry and Tony Kliendienst, Inverell Sporties’ Gary Baxter and Colin Job, and South Tamworth’s Brett Goodchild and Andrew Nichols.

The Dorings challenged Baxter and Job on Saturday morning and scored a narrow 15 shots to 14 victory and then won another close contest that afternoon when they defeated Vanry and Kliendienst 18 shots to 15.

Their Sunday morning round three fixture was another tight affair, but they held strong to make it three from three when they outscored Goodchild and Nichols 17 shots to 15 to top the section and progress through to the Zone 3 final.

Werris Creek’s Daniel Crockatt and James Roberts topped the section two ladder despite having a negative for and against difference following their two wins and one loss, which saw the duo go through to the final.

In another enthralling close contest, the Dorings managed to get the job done 21 shots to 19 to qualify for the State Championships, which will be held in Dubbo next year in March.

The open pairs final was won by Glen Innes duo Matt Jarrett and Paul Jopson, who beat Gunnedah’s Scott and Tim Thorning 23 shots to 22 in the decider, and the senior pairs final was won by Lightning Ridge’s Ray Brown and Anthony Kelly, who outscored the North Tamworth team of Harry Wicks and Graemne Cameron 17 shots to 13 in the decider.

Those two winning teams also go through to the State Champs playoffs.
