Another enjoyable and entertaining Narrabri Junior Soccer season will come to an end this Saturday, but this year’s grand final proceedings will get underway earlier than expected when the under-14-17 decider is contested under lights at Hogan Oval tonight.
McDonald’s and Cotton Seed Distributors will play that match from 6.30pm, which will wrap what has been a thrilling finals series.
CSD won the minor premiership after finishing first on the four-team ladder at the end of the regular season but they almost missed out on a spot in the decider.
They lost 2-1 against McDonald’s in the major semi-final, and were then held to a 1-all draw against the third-placed side Shearin Excavations in the preliminary final.
But CSD managed to overcome the Wee Waa side in a penalty shootout to go through to the grand final.
Following five compulsory shots, it was all square at 2-all, which saw the sudden death penalties begin. Both teams miss their sixth shots and then CSD scored their seventh, but the Wee Waa team missed theirs, so the minor premiers came away winners.
Narrabri Junior Soccer will operate a barbecue and canteen at Hogan Oval tomorrow night and encouraged everyone to come along to watch a highly-anticipated game.
At Gately Field this Saturday, the Narrabri Junior Soccer’s 12/13-years grand final will kick off at 9am with Damien Chiplin Plumbing taking on Carla Baxter Real Estate.
All of the other age groups will be playing a mini carnival style format, with games to start at 9am and then a presentation to be held afterwards at around 11.30 am.
Meanwhile, Narrabri Soccer Club held the annual Graeme Sunderland Memorial Six-A-Side carnival last month on Sunday, August 6, with more than 60 teams competing.
There were hundreds of youngsters aged from 5 to 16 years old playing.
It was the second carnival played in memory of the club’s late former president Graeme Sunderland after lasts year was washed out after trying several times to host it.
Teams travelled from Gunnedah, Quirindi, Inverell, Tamworth, Moree and Coonabarabran to take part in 2023.
“Narrabri entered 16 teams across the age groups,” Narrabri Soccer Club president Danny Laws said.
“We had the pleasure of having one of Graeme’s sons, Jacob Sunderland, present the winners and runners-up trophies and medals.
