One of the highlights of the school holidays here in Narrabri are Narrabri Tennis’ holiday tennis clinics, another of which was held at the Dangar Park Tennis Centre this week from Monday through to today.

There were 70 youngsters who took to the courts during the week, with more than 50 players a day turning up to take part.

Narrabri Tennis’ director and head coach Shane Murphy told The Courier that it had been yet another enjoyable clinic.

“As per usual, we’re having a sensational clinic,” Murphy said.

“We have got a great mix of clinic veterans, some players that come and go, and some new faces.

“The kids are having a blast. They are loving it.

“We still have our connect the dots philosophy. So on Monday, we learn basic ball skills, forehands and focus on rallying, then on Tuesday we do a bit of forehand revision and move into the backhands, on Wednesday we look at starting the rallies with our serves and we get into matchplay, then we round the week off on the Thursday with a bit of net play.

“We encompass everything you can do on the tennis court.

“We’ve averaged over 50 kids each day, which is sensational, considering there are other activities and other sports on this week. It just shows how strong tennis is in Narrabri.”

Assisting Murphy during the week were junior coaches Jack Hartnett, Ava Garbutt, George Bennett and Lily Campbell.

Murphy said they all did a fantastic job, and it was always comforting to know that he could run them through what they needed to do each morning and trust them to execute instructions independently and as expected during each day.

Narrabri Tennis is looking forward to a busy few months to finish off the year.

The North West Championships will be held in Gunnedah next month on Saturday and Sunday, October 7 and 8, and at home, Narrabri and District Tennis Association’s 2023 Junior Club Championships event is expected to be held on a Sunday in November.

No date has been locked in for that event yet, however, it will include age groups from 6-years up to 18-years.

Murphy advised that the NDTA and Narrabri Tennis would release more information regarding that event in the coming weeks.
