Darrell Tiemens and Brett Dickinson were elected unopposed to the positions of mayor and deputy mayor at Tuesday’s ordinary council meeting.

Cr Tiemens steps up to the role of mayor having served as deputy mayor since September 2022. He was elected to council at the local government election in late 2021.

Cr Dickinson has also served as a councillor since the 2021 election.

The new council leadership team will hold the mayor and deputy mayor positions until the local council elections anticipated to take place in September 2024.

Cr Ron Campbell, who was first elected as mayor in September 2020, did not stand for the position again but will continue to serve as a councillor.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be elected to this role, and I look forward to working with councillors, staff, and the community over the coming year,” said Cr Tiemens.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Cr Dickinson on being elected as deputy mayor.”

“Importantly, I’d like to pay tribute to Cr Campbell, who has been a Narrabri Shire councillor for seven years and as mayor during the past three years and who oversaw some significant milestones during this time, not least the delivery of a wide range of community and infrastructure projects.

“This is in addition to the exceptional leadership of Cr Campbell during some difficult times for our Shire, including the recent flood events.

“I thank Cr Campbell, who, together with council and Narrabri Shire staff, showed an ongoing and unwavering commitment to our community, including fostering the growth and prosperity of our region.”

Crs Greg Lamont and Rohan Boehm chose to abstain from voting on the mayor election and Crs Lamont, Boehm, Robert Browning and John Clements chose to abstain from voting on the deputy mayor election.
