Festivities will be in full swing this Saturday as the Baan Baa Hall marks its centenary.

The community hall has been a central part of village life, earlier known as the Literary Institute.

Its name officially changed to the Baan Baa Hall later in its rich history.

The facilities are a testament to the Baan Baa Community Hall committee which is encouraging the shire community to help celebrate the 100th anniversary.

An action-packed programme is on offer on Saturday, running from 10am to 4pm.

The festivities start with a morning tea provided by the hall committee.

A barbecue lunch cooked by the Boggabri Lions Club will follow.

Organisers have also ensured there are a range of activities to suit all ages, making Saturday’s centenary celebration a family affair.

Entertainment will be provided to celebration-goers in the afternoon, with performances by Amarni Grace and Sarah Leete.

Activities on offer include face painting and novelty games.

The traditional games of the egg and spoon race, sack race, three-legged race and tug-of-war are sure to be a hit.

The hall committee is also hoping to welcome back former Baan Baa locals for the milestone.

The community hall has been essential to community life. It was used by the musical and dramatic society, the Country Women’s Association as well as school concerts.

Cabaret balls and dances were also a popular attraction.

The hall’s use continues today and following the celebration it will serve as a polling booth for the referendum.

Saturday’s centenary festivities will also mark the first official use of playground facilities added to the hall grounds in recent years.

The proceedings have been overseen by hall committee president Steve Eather, secretary/treasurer Ellen McClung and fellow committee members and volunteers.

“Everyone is welcome to come along on Saturday. You don’t have to be from Baan Baa to join in,” Ellen said. “We want to ensure it is a real family day out.”

The committee will also hold raffles on the day to raise money for the facility’s upkeep.

Boggabri Coal has sponsored the event.

Work on the grounds has been occurring for the past month, preparing for the event.

Baan Baa’s oldest resident Carl Patterson will officially cut the centenary cake.
