The Kindness Initiative is a new addition to Narrabri High School.

We have one simple goal and that is to spread kindness amongst the NHS community, staff and students alike.

The group meet every Friday at recess and the door is open for all.

The group has adopted the marigold image as part of the logo as during our first meeting a staff member introduced us to a concept known as the Marigold Effect.

The basic principle of the marigold effect is that the marigold plant has some amazing abilities, such as warding off vegetable eating pests and harmful weeds that rob the soil of nutrients and suffocate other plants.

As such it is an excellent ‘companion plant’.

Plants that grow around marigolds tend to thrive.

If we apply this to our daily interactions, we can see that ‘marigolds’ exist in our communities.

They encourage, they support, and they help others to grow.

They are the people who cheer others on and offer support when times are tough.

The group are endeavouring to be the marigolds in the school community.

“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” – Bob Kerrey.
