The Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce Christmas Street Carnival is set to return bigger and better than before, with a large range of festive entertainment and activities planned for this Friday evening.

The event is an initiative of the chamber, with Whitehaven Coal as the major sponsor.

Chamber president Russell Stewart said planning for the festival had been underway for months to ensure a big return this year.

“Every year our Christmas Street Carnival keeps getting bigger and better,” Mr Stewart said.

“We continue to have great involvement from our local service clubs and community organisations. We are pleased to welcome them back again this year.

“Our carnival rides always are a popular attraction and we are proud to have a great offering.”

Mr Stewart said the aim of the carnival is to encourage the community to get together, support local businesses on the late shopping night and enjoy the family Christmas atmosphere of the carnival. This year, the carnival is again being held on a Friday evening follow a change last year. The change in day proved incredibly successful and Mr Stewart hopes the chamber’s festivities will have the same support this year.

A motorcycle and vintage car display as well as live music will also form part of Friday’s carnival offering.

The winners from The Courier and Wee Waa News’ Shop Local Christmas promotion will be drawn at 7.30pm.

“We will also have a variety of food available,” chamber president Mr Stewart said.

The family event is one of the biggest on the Narrabri calendar, with thousands of people turning out to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

In addition to the large contribution made by Whitehaven, and the chamber’s long-running championing of the carnival, this year’s event has been supported by Santos and Narrabri Shire Council.

The chamber Christmas tree, supported by local business GFS Engineering, will again serve as a bright back drop for the evening’s festivities.

“The carnival is the perfect opportunity for people – friends and family – to catch up over Christmas,” Mr Stewart said.

The central business block in Maitland Street will be closed in the afternoon for the carnival’s 5pm start. People are asked to remove their vehicles by 3.30pm.

“Your chamber is excited to bring the carnival to Narrabri. It is always a fun-filled event that brings a lot of joy to our community,” Mr Stewart said. “It is the aim of chamber to make this an affordable event for families. Thanks to generous sponsors, we are able to offer a range of carnival rides for a low $2.”
