In the heart of the North West, a Gunnedah local business is quietly revolutionising the way we think about waste and resource management.
Since the inception of MacKellar Resources in January 2022, the company has emerged as a contributor to environmental responsibility, making significant strides in resource recovery from waste and providing invaluable landfill services to society.
One of MacKellar Resources’ most notable achievements lies in its commitment to extracting value from waste materials.
Through innovative processes, the company has successfully recovered over 350 tonnes of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
This not only diverts substantial amounts of waste from landfills but also reintroduces these metals into circulation as new materials after processing.
The impact doesn’t stop there. MacKellar Resources has also demonstrated success in recovering concrete, brick, rubble, ceramics, and porcelain.
These materials are crushed using an impact crusher to create a high-quality recovered roadbase.
“We believe the numbers to date are impressive’ said Tim MacKellar of MacKellar Resources.
“So far, we have had production of over 4,000 tonnes of recovered roadbase.
“This versatile material serves multiple purposes, ranging from park-up pads to road construction and as a solid foundation material.”
The significance of MacKellar Resources’ achievements cannot be overstated.
By embracing sustainable practices and investing in cutting-edge technology such as a water bath to separate plastics from rubble, the company is playing a crucial role in mitigating the environmental impact of waste.
“Investments like this are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Tim said.
“It shows the confidence we have in this town and region and the decision to expand into waste management as a way to future proof the company.”
The recovered metals and roadbase not only reduce the strain on natural resources but also contribute to a circular economy where materials are reused, recycled, and given a new lease on life.
The success story of MacKellar Resources serves as a testament to the potential of local businesses to drive positive change while at the same time opening new employment opportunities.
The resource recovery and waste management side of the business now employs 11 people full time – jobs that didn’t exist in the community up until now.
As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, it’s encouraging to see a company like MacKellar Resources ‘having a good crack at it’.
Their commitment to resource recovery and sustainable waste management feeds into a greater desire by everyone to see a better use made of waste material rather than the old approach of ‘everything to landfill’.
MacKellar Resources is not just paving roads – it is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future in the North West and beyond.
