Newell Highway traffic through Narrabri was diverted past Killarney Street corner for four hours on Thursday night as Narrabri Fire and Rescue and other personnel dealt with the spill of some slippery, plant-based oil on the road.
The slippery spill just after 6pmcaused some vehicles to lose traction and slide at the roundabout on the outskirts of Narrabri and on the Tibbereena Street bridge corner and Killarney Street corner.
There were no injuries to motorists reported but there were reportedly some minor incidents as some vehicles slipped and hit the kerb or median strip and struck some road signs.
“It appears that the oily material has spilled from a vehicle passing through town,” said Narrabri Fire and Rescue Station Commander Shane Bradford.
The potentially dangerous slippery spots were attended by three fire units and the Hazmat vehicle, police units, traffic control and shire council personnel.
A front end loader was brought in to spread grit onto the oily material.
“The oily material seems to have spilled at the corners, the roundabout, bridge approach and Killarney Street,” said Mr Bradford. “The spilt material appeared to peter out about Doctor’s Creek bridge.
“It was a yellow liquid – very greasy – and a shower of rain made it even more slippery. We had to be careful standing or walking on the oily bitumen surface,” said Mr Bradford.
