The shire community is being encouraged to nominate a worthy recipient for the Senior of the Year award.

The winner will be announced at the 2024 Senior Festival luncheon on Thursday, March 14.

The honour celebrates and acknowledges the important role seniors play in the shire community.

Nominees must be residents of Narrabri Shire and aged 60 years or older, or 50 for Aboriginals, Torres Strait Islanders or people with a lifelong disability.

Mayor Darrell Tiemens is encouraging the community to celebrate people’s contributions to the community by nominating them for the award.

Last year, a dedication to community organisations saw Joan Griffiths, of Narrabri, named the 2023 recipient.

Alongside Mrs Griffiths, nominees were Ron Lowder, Roger Hollingworth, Margaret Hallett and Patricia Hadley.

Mrs Griffiths volunteers in many organisations. She is a valued and hardworking member of Narrabri Shared Table Community Kitchen.

Mrs Griffiths provides empathy and support to others by sharing her knowledge from her own life experiences, particularly in relation to Narrabri Carers’ and Caring Group.

Mrs Griffiths’ involvement in the Narrabri Parkrun is welcomed as she encourages those young and old to improve their quality of life.

Additionally, Mrs Griffiths is part of Meals on Wheels, the Carers Morning Tea group, Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group, and an avid supporter for family and carers of dementia sufferers.

All nominees were described as treasured members of the community who give so much of their time.

To nominate someone for the 2024 award, visit council’s website or visit the Maitland Street office. Entries close on February 2.
