This year the Narrabri Shire saw eight of its community members naturalised at the Australia Day citizenship ceremony on Friday, January 26.
Mayor Darrell Tiemens welcomed the new citizens originally from the Philippines and New Zealand in the Multipurpose room of the Narrabri Aquatic Centre and spoke about the wonderful diversity of culture within the Narrabri Shire.
Cr Tiemens acted as presiding officer for the ceremony and read Hon Andrew Giles MP’s Minister’s message.
“Today you join a nation that is one of the world’s most successful multicultural societies, with around half of all Australians either born overseas or with at least one parent born overseas.”
“On behalf of the Australian Government, heartfelt congratulations on becoming an Australian citizen.”
Attendees were then invited to repeat the Australian citizenship pledge of commitment out loud before being presented as new citizens.
Among those being naturalised were Alistair Russell Stewart, the current St Joseph’s Primary School principal in Wee Waa and Gwabegar’s Snr Cons Bronwyn Jayne Mackie.
Australia Day Ambassador Clyde Campbell AM presented new citizens with their official certificates and they were also gifted an Australian native gum tree.
