WORKSHOPS
Mosaic tile – Awan Eveleigh

A mosaic workshop, conducted by Narrabri artist Awan Eveleigh, features as part of the CREATE offering.
Mosaic tile – Awan Eveleigh
Mosaic work is a form of art that dates back to Mesopotamia (third millennium BC), these were made from pieces of coloured stone, shells and ivory.
Later on the Ancient Greeks and Romans would take this art form and design picture murals and by the fifth and sixth century started to add small glass cubes, usually square shaped, made of stone or handmade glass enamel of different colours. The word used to describe these is tesserae.
Modern mosaic work now uses many different tesserae from glass, bottle caps, beads, to different types of ceramic tiles to broken crockery.
The beauty of mosaic work is that it is fun, tranquil work and you get to meet and chat with new creative people. The Create theme for 2024 is COUNTRY, so make a tile/ceramics mosaic that is your interpretation of Australian flowers such as banksias, wattle or gum flowers for example .
