Narrabri Bowling Club hosted round one of Zone 3 Bowls’ 2023/24 season grade five section two open gender pennants competition on Saturday when the home side met Lightning Ridge at the John McNamara Owen Campey Green.
Despite Narrabri winning two of the three rinks on the day, a heavy loss on the third saw them go down 71 shots to 60 on the overall scoreboard. That saw Lightning Ridge earn eight of the 10 competition points on offer and Narrabri pick up the other two.
The Narrabri team of Dave Dewar, Steve Daskey, Janice Foxe and Marie Redman secured a narrow 22 shots to 20 win on their rink against Tracey Coglan, Lyall Shailer, Thomas Stanton and Phillip Morris. The score was 20-all on the 20th end and the Narrabri bowlers got the job done as they scored two on the last end to claim the win.
Clubmates Scott Dewar, Len Ryan, Stuart Coleman and Col Armstrong were victorious in more dominant fashion on their rink. They led their game against Peter Collison, Victor Henry Murray, Jamie Cubby and Raymond Brown from the fourth end and eventually prevailed 25 shots to 15.
Lightning Ridge scored a big win on the other rink as Narrabri’s Tony Redman, Eva Sadler, Di Chessells and Helen Woodward were defeated 36 shots to 13 by Peter Holloway, James McCarthy, Michael John Mitchell and Anthony Kelly.
Narrabri will be at home again in the second round of the competition this Saturday against Wee Waa.
The Narrabri teams are as follows:
Scott Dewar, Len Ryan, Tony Redman and Col Armstrong; David Dewar, Cindy Neil, Steve Daskey and Janice Foxe; Lisa Pillar, Eva Sadler, Rebecca Taylor and Di Chessells. Marie Redman will be the manager for Narrabri on the day.
Meanwhile, the Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s 2024 season will begin this Thursday, March 7. Social bowls for both the men and women will be played. The club has advised players to put their names down on the sheet at the club or to be there before 9am to let the ladies know how many players they have.
