One of Narrabri’s iconic businesses, MJ’s Newsagency in the centre of Maitland Street, will close its doors on March 17.

MJ’s has been operated by co-owners Mel Richardson and Jodie Hill for eight years.

“We have regretfully made the decision to close,” said Mrs Hill.

“We originally planned to run the newsagency for five years when we took over from previous owners, the Eather family, and we have other family matters and interests to focus on nowadays and need to have time freed up to do that.”

Just about every member of the community has passed through MJ’s doors in the past eight years.

One of the proprietors of MJ’s Newsagency, Jodie Hill.

“We have enjoyed every minute of our time at the newsagency,” Mrs Hill said. “We thank our customers.”

The co-owners stepped in to buy the business when it became available and have been the cheerful faces behind the counter, delivering newspapers to our homes each day.

They saw the need for the community to have its own newsagency and welcomed the opportunity to provide the service.

“We have sought a buyer for the business but none has been forthcoming”Mrs Hill said.

“However, naturally we would still like to hear from anybody interested in taking over.

“The business would suit a young couple,” Mrs Hill added.
