A whopping 2.3 tonnes of carp were hooked and cleared from waterways for the Narrabri Amateur Fishing Club’s 16th annual Narrabri Carp Muster on the weekend, March 2 and 3.
There were four seasons of weather experienced in one weekend, but no cloud could put a damper on the spirits of avid fishermen and women and their yearly tradition of going carp fishing.
Up and down Narrabri Creek and along the Namoi riverbanks community members and visiting muster-enthusiasts tossed their lines, with reports or huge catches coming in from west of Wee Waa, Boggabri and all the way from east to west.
Tinned corn was the bait of choice, and the biggest carp of the weekend went to Jaxon Davies for a whopper catch weighing in at 5.425 kilograms.
The biggest junior catch of the weekend went to Harper Gillies, weighing in at an impressive 5.075 kilos.
Keen musterers came in their droves, with 537 from across the region, including a family of four making a special trip as a gift to their dad, who had heard all about the annual muster and needed to get in on the action himself.
The Saturday effort saw 1020 kilo of carp cleared from the Namoi river, and 1280 kilos on Sunday.
The annual family-friendly event is a great way to raise awareness of the environmental impact of carp on our river systems, and of course, to serve as a great day out for the community.
One of the cheapest musters around, each entry registration also gets you a free steak sandwich and a drink, and every fish caught gets you a chance at winning $20 000 worth of prizes.
