Part of the iconic Mount Kaputar National Park has been restored, enabling locals and tourists alike to enjoy breathtaking views across the Nandewar Ranges.
The West Kaputar Rock Lookout has been reconstructed after being damaged in the Black Summer bushfires during the 2019-20 season.
The facility sustained significant damage as a result of the blaze.
During the Black Summer bushfire season, wildfires burnt through 20,000 hectares of Mount Kaputar National Park.
As a result, elevated walkways, bridges, fences and viewing platforms were damaged or destroyed.
Works have been ongoing to fix the damage across the national park.
The new lookout has been constructed using a durable steel structure to improve longevity and accessibility.
National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Louisa Anderson said the West Kaputar Rock Lookout is a favourite amongst visitors, offering panoramic views of the national park’s rugged wilderness.
“It was a priority for us to replace this lookout as it provides such a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the landscape and appreciate its dramatic views,” she said.
“We can’t wait to welcome visitors back to this area of the park in coming months.”
Contractors fabricated, constructed, and installed the new West Kaputar Rock boardwalk and viewing platform in the same location as the original structure.
Works were undertaken within the existing footprint to protect the park’s unique flora and fauna, including the giant Mount Kaputar pink slug.
