Chilly conditions were unable to deter 82 players from Boggabri, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Walcha, Tallwoods Country Club, Barraba, Spring Ridge, Scone, Werris Creek and Tamworth from lining up at the Boggabri Golf Club’s annual men’s open day on Sunday.

This year was the 50th anniversary of sponsorship of the day by Jacob and Anderson as well as the inaugural competition between the hosts and Tallwood Country Club.

Jacob and Anderson’s Guy Gallen explained how proud he was that his family had been sponsoring the event for 50 years. He thanked the Boggabri community for making them feel so welcome, the club’s committee for the organisation of the day each year and the volunteer course curators for such a wonderful course.

The ladies in the kitchen received yet another special mention for the morning tea and lunch the golfers all look forward to each year, and the Gunnedah golfers who always make the trip to Boggabri received a special mention too.

There were 12 golfers from Tallwood Country Club who made the trip from the Mid-North Coast. Boggabri’s past president Robert Collyer now resides there and the two clubs have forged a friendship that on Sunday saw the inaugural Tallwood v Boggabri Red River Gums competition contested.

The three top scores from the two-person teams from each club were tallied to decide the winners.

The Tallwood scores were Brett Eschbach and Tony Hartwell with 46, Mark Fisher and Peter Redgrove with 43, Dave Fraith and Mick Hardie with 41 for a total of 130. Boggabri’s score Ricky Hall and Bert Devine with 47, Paul Ayton and Peter Maunder with 43, Jason Davis and Shaun Hampstead with 41 for a total of 131. Thus, Boggabri were declared the winners for 2024.
