Wee Waa Show Society’s dedicated committee has been hard at work, preparing the pavilion and showground for the highly anticipated 2024 Wee Waa Show.
The action-packed schedule of entertainment and competition kicks off this Friday, August 16, and will continue on Saturday, August 17.
The much-loved show is one of the most popular events on the district’s social calendar, with a variety of activities and amusements for people of all ages.
This year’s theme is ‘Sow it, Grow it, Show it’ and the Wee Waa Show Society is encouraging locals to invite their friends and family, from near and far, to the Cotton Capital for the spectacular event.
“It’s the biggest event Wee Waa has every year, and everybody loves to go to the show,” said show secretary Ethan Towns.
“We’ve got all the rides and there’s so many different sections as well – there really is something for everyone.
“You’ve got cooking, horses, there’s not really anything we miss in terms of age groups.
“I think the Wee Waa Show is definitely one of the best shows.
“I know a lot of people from Narrabri who come out for it because it is a community driven show.
“Everyone feels welcome, and everyone is welcome.”
New and traditional sections are on the show’s schedule: the famous lolly drop from the skies; horse judging; Friday night fireworks; live music including Sam Snape, The Viper Creek Band and Wee Waa rapper DaPar; cross cut saw; young farmers’ challenge; siphon pipe starting competition; dog high jump; baby show; pet show; show and shine car displays; woodchopping; meat masters competition and more. With prize money and some amazing raffle goods up for grabs including a John Deere ride on lawn mower valued at $5500, thanks to Hutcheon & Pearce.
Wee Waa’s Got Talent is back for 2024, with anyone who can sing, dance, play an instrument, recite poetry or perform a magic trick encouraged to take centre stage.
The fun continues down sideshow alley for youth – and those young at heart – who love the rides, there will also be snakes, fairies, and dinosaurs as part of the kids’ entertainment.
The exhibits in the showground’s mighty pavilion are always a crowd favourite, with attendees flocking to see the local goods showcased. From the hotly contested baking competitions to photography, flowers, Lego and handicrafts.
Another highlight is the big announcement of the winners of the Young Woman of the Year competition on Friday night, when the crowd will have the opportunity to support and hear from some young and passionate local rural ambassadors.
It’s understood some of the show’s staunch and unwavering volunteers will also receive life membership honours.
The Wee Waa Show has enjoyed a long history of success since its inception in 1913, consistently embracing the agricultural foundations of the show movement.
Always on the hunt for more volunteers, the show committee was delighted to receive a youthful boost this year with some fresh faces joining the army of volunteers and stepping up to new roles, including Ethan Towns.
“This is my first time show in the role of secretary and it’s been quite a big job, but it’s been good to learn how to run such a massive event because – my gosh – there are a lot of people supporting this event and we are grateful to our sponsors and helpers,” said Ethan.
“You don’t realise until it’s on one big spreadsheet just how many people support the show – it’s great.
“And thanks to all our stewards too, they’re here today sweeping and cleaning and getting everything ready.
“I originally got involved in the show last year because they had no one to do the talent show and, at the last minute, I got called into run it.
“But this year I was like – I can do more.
“I want to learn how to run big events like this as well and just see what goes on behind the scenes, which is a lot, my gosh, there’s a lot.
“But it’s been interesting and fun.
“And this year, the Wee Waa Rotaract club, which I started, is involved in the talent show – so that’s good.
“I think young people in Wee Waa are starting to really get involved in things for the community.
“I mean look at the Wee Waa Rotaract Club – we’re the biggest in the district and it’s all young people.
“And I think the show is a good one to be involved with too because you really get ‘it’s all about having fun and making sure people have fun’.
“There’s really no other motive for having this show other than to have fun and showcase what locals can do.”
