The cream rose to the top again on Sunday as David Avery was crowned Wee Waa Golf Club’s 2024 season club champion.
The 30-year-old Wee Waa man went into the weekend’s 36-hole event with half a decade of dominance behind him, and he stretched his streak to six after winning by eight shots from this year’s Wee Waa Open champion Ty Baker.
There was just one shot separating the two club captains following the 18 holes that were played on Saturday as Avery shot a par score of 72 and Baker shot a one-over-par 73. Avery went one better on Sunday as he finished the day with a one-under-par 71 across 18 holes to finish with 143, which was a shot under the par score of 144. Baker shot a six-over-par 78 in the second round to finish as the runner-up on 151.
The three other A-grade competitors were Greg Avery (162), Anthony Gray (165) and Jeremy Thorne (180).
Wee Waa Golf Club adopted a new format for this year’s club champs event to the one that was used in previous years. It was previously a 72-hole event played across three days over three separate weekends, but club officials decided that a 36-hole event on the same weekend would be much more beneficial in 2024.
Avery showed that he can thrive in any format as his consistency got him over the line comfortably once again. His impressive streak stretches all the way back to 2019 when he won his first club championship after he finished as the runner-up two years earlier in 2017.
He told The Courier that he enjoyed the weekend and was proud to have extended his championship streak in what were near-perfect conditions for golf.
“It was a really great weekend,” Avery said.
“We have a good little club there. It’s a nice one to be a part of.
“It’s a pretty good achievement and I’m really happy with it.
“I played pretty well both days; I just had one hole that did me both days. I was two-under coming into it on both days and I double-bogeyed it on the Saturday and bogeyed it on Sunday. That was the 17th, then I parred the 18th on both days.”
One of the highlights of the weekend for the champion was an eagle on the 11th on Sunday after he chipped from about 40 metres out and found the hole off one bounce.
Avery gave the new club champs format a tick of approval but said it did not attract the numbers that the club had hoped for.
“It seemed to go alright, I think, but we didn’t get the numbers we were hoping for though, Avery said.
“I think we’ll go back to the drawing board for next year to try and get more numbers.”
This year’s B-grade gross winner was Kevin Baker, who finished with 170 after two days’ play. Mark Hennessy was the B-grade gross runner-up with 171 and the nett winner with 145.
The C-grade gross winner was David Russell with 197. David Crutcher was the C-grade gross runner-up with 202 and the nett winner with 152.
