Boggabri Rotary Club held their ladies’ night on Wednesday with a delicious baked dinner and dessert prior to hearing of the plans for the ‘Small Schools Public Speaking Competition’.

The club sponsors the competition by providing trophies, timekeepers, a barbecue lunch for all participants and staff.

Malcolm Donaldson commented that he was amazed and pleased to see the improvement in the students over the years of competing.

“You see a Year 6 child stand up there in front of adjudicators and timekeepers and deliver a very professional speech.

“Loud, clear and concise and then you think back to the time that the same student was delivering his first speech timidly standing next to a support person.”

“It’s a wonderful experience for everyone involved,” he said.

Boggabri Rotary Club has a membership of 11 and most meeting nights have perfect attendance.

Club president Mal Turner said that the club’s main source of income is the collection of car, truck and tractor type batteries.

They sell these and with the proceeds have been supporting a wide variety of projects such as Trollies for the St Barnabas Food pantry, skate park, seating at the Boggabri pool, shade shelter at the cemetery, book prizes for the four schools at their end of year presentations, erection of the CWA 100-year seat and many more.

Mr Turner said the club only has two women members and they would welcome more, however, more male or females would be most welcome, and of course battery donations.
