Oztag in Narrabri has taken the town by storm since arriving in October last year, and the first Narrabri Oztag winter season recently wrapped up with its grand final night on Tuesday, September 17.
The campaign kicked off back in July and saw eight senior teams take part.
There were 11 rounds this season, after which teams were split into two grades, with the four top-ranked teams going into A-grade and the next four teams making up B-grade.
The A-grade teams were Paradise, Namoi Natives, In Da Levee and One Tag Wonder after they finished first to fourth, respectively, and the B-grade sides were Keycrete, BHC, the Sharp Shooters and KT Civil after they were placed fifth to eighth, respectively.
Paradise ended the regular season as the undefeated minor premiers following nine wins from as many matches and two washed-out draws. Their for and against after those nine games were a remarkable 140 and 29, which were both competition-bests.
They eventually cruised through to the grand final when they defeated second-placed Namoi Natives 10-2 in the major semi-final on September 3.
Namoi Natives then met One Tag Wonder in the preliminary final on September 10 after the fourth-placed side beat third-placed In Da Levee 10-5 in the minor semi-final, and the Natives got the job done with an 11-2 victory to earn a place in the decider.
Paradise were too good once again on grand final night as they scored an 11th straight win when they downed Namoi Natives 10-4 to finish as the undefeated minor and major premiers.
The male player of the grand final was Paradise’s Isaiah Cochrane and the female player of the grand final was Namoi Natives’ Menzie Baker.
In B-grade, Keycrete defeated BHC 9-4 in the major semi-final to qualify for the grand final, and they were joined by Sharp Shooters after they won the minor semi-final 17-0 against KT Civil and the preliminary final 10-0 against BHC.
Keycrete prevailed on the night as they outscored Sharp Shooters 10-5.
Keycrete’s Dylan Segundo was the male player of the grand final and the Sharp Shooters’ Vienna Eather was the female player of the grand final.
Narrabri Oztag also announced the players of the season for the 2024 winter campaign on grand final night.
The male player of the season was Keycrete’s Rowan Keeler and the female player of the season was Namoi Native’s Tyanna Gaydon.
Narrabri Oztag’s Callan Woodhouse told The Courier the season was an enjoyable one and the organisers were excited for the summer campaign, which will get underway on Tuesday, October 15, and will include both senior and junior competitions.
