Concluding the end of its 2024 season, ArtsNational Narrabri drew a large crowd to The Crossing Theatre on Monday, October 21.
UK art historian Paul Chapman presented ‘Matisse – Simple Beauty’, an arts talk leading up to Matisse’s later years and his famous ‘cut-out’ designs.
Matisse (December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954), was one of the undisputed masters of 20th century art, a French artist known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship.
Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the opening decades of the 20th century.
In 2022, a Sydney-exclusive exhibition offered arts enthusiasts an immersion in the range of the art of Matisse, who still today is one of the world’s most beloved, innovative and influential artists.
Developed in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the exhibition housed the greatest single display of Matisse masterworks ever to be seen in Sydney.
And for those who may have missed this exhibition, Mr Chapman’s presentation on Monday evening was filled with the inspirational painter’s brilliant colours, dynamic energy, and visual joy – taking his audience on a journey through Matisse’s life.
Starting from Matisse’s early experimentation with colour as what was known as the fauvist movement, through to his stunning designs for the Rosary Chapel in Vence, France, Mr Chapman’s talk followed six decades of an extraordinary life.
Matisse renewed his vision time and time again across a long career, eternally seeking new ways of celebrating the visual world and expressing the energy he felt in it.
