Narrabri Shire Council has announced that Disaster Relief Australia (DRA), in partnership with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and council, will be bringing the renowned Big Map flood resilience exercise to Narrabri.
Scheduled for Sunday, November 3, at The Crossing Theatre the Big Map event will provide a unique opportunity for community members to collaborate, develop essential skills, and strengthen local disaster preparedness.
“The Big Map exercise is about more than identifying potential hazards – it’s an engaging way for residents to connect and equip themselves with the knowledge to manage risks before disaster strikes,” said Narrabri Shire mayor, Cr Darrell Tiemens.
“These kinds of proactive initiatives are crucial for ensuring our community can recover and rebuild efficiently if the need arises.”
Participants will work alongside DRA and NSW SES representatives using a large, interactive map of the region to:
• Identify and manage hazards
• Build individual, family, and community resilience
• Strengthen preparedness for disaster situations
“Resilience starts before disaster hits. This event will empower Narrabri residents to take meaningful steps in protecting themselves and their community,” Cr Tiemens said.
“It’s also an excellent opportunity to foster greater connection within our region and ensure we are prepared for future challenges.”
