On Sunday, November 3 the Wee Waa & District Preschool held its highly anticipated annual Golf Day and Melbourne Cup Calcutta at the Wee Waa Golf Club, marking another successful community event.

Despite it being a busy time of year with harvest, the community turned out in full support, ensuring the day was a success and contributing to the preschool’s ongoing fundraising efforts.

The day kicked off with the event’s regular and committed golfers battling through warmer temperatures and windy conditions to complete their rounds.

The winning team- Willy Baker, Troy Bartz, and Jeremy Thorne, took home the top prize, while the runners-up, Ty Baker, Angus Galagher, and Jackson Humphries, earned second place.

With Angus Galagher taking out ‘Nearest to Pin’ the men’s prize on the 9th hole, while Anna Baird won the women’s prize on the 18th hole.

The event also saw the addition of a Ladies Long Lunch, made possible through a grant from the Narrabri Shire Community Financial Assistance Program.

The lunch was a great success with guests enjoying an exquisite meal catered by Connie Smith and decadent desserts from Wee Waa Hot Bread.

An array of cocktails was also on the menu, with Rosemary from Black Snake Distillery generously donating her time to mixing up refreshing margaritas and palomas to the delight of attendees.

A huge drawcard of the day was the Ann-Maree Galagher Memorial Champagne Auction, sponsored once again by the Galagher family in memory of Ann-Maree, a former president of the preschool and a huge advocate for early childhood education and spent many years supporting its growth.

The auction was a key part of the fundraising efforts and was hugely successful.
In the afternoon, the Melbourne Cup Calcutta took place.

Thanks to the efforts of Dick Crutcher, who took a day off from harvest to emcee the event, the Calcutta was a lively success.

Dick also handled the auctioning of the horses, with bidders even phoning in from headers and holidays, unable to attend in person.

The overall prize pool for the Calcutta reached over $6300, with proceeds going to the top three place-getters, as well as a portion going directly to the preschool.

The event would not have been possible without the ongoing support of local businesses, who played a vital role in its success.

Ten businesses generously sponsored holes on the golf course, while several others contributed prizes for both the golf tournament and the champagne auction.

These contributions helped the preschool maximise its fundraising efforts, ensuring that the event was a great success.

Funds raised from this year’s event will go towards the continued renovation of the preschool’s front yard, which is being transformed into exciting new outdoor learning environments.

The Wee Waa & District Preschool extended its sincere thanks to all who attended, donated, and volunteered, making this annual event a shining example of the community spirit that helps the preschool continue its mission of providing quality education and care for local children.
