Narrabri High School had the pleasure of hosting NRL State of Mind Community Ambassadors Joel Thompson and Ben Roberts this term when they visited Narrabri High School to talk to students about the ‘Get in the GAAME’ program.

This program focuses on mental health and wellbeing, strategies to manage stress, ways we can support a mate and where to get support.

The program brings a youth focus (ages 13-17) to the State of Mind program and aims to provide participants with the skills and confidence to provide support to a person experiencing mental health problems, and to help them to access appropriate support if needed.

The 90-minute standalone workshop involves both on and off the field activities designed to help participants understand the importance of good mental health and recognise this as an area they can have an impact on.

Through the use of rugby league language and the junior club environment, the program is able to help participants:

• Increase their knowledge of mental health difficulties.

• Increase their confidence to support people going through a difficult time.

• Encourage help seeking behaviours and to connect with experts when necessary.

• Inspire participants to become a local leader in creating a connected, mentally healthy and resilient community.

Following the school visit, an informative evening discussing mental health was held at the Narrabri RSL. The events were well-supported.
