Idemitsu Boggabri Coal staff, ‘Glentarkie’ Boggabri Home for the Aged committee representatives and Narrabri Shire Council representatives held a groundbreaking ceremony on-site at Glentarkie.

“It is getting real now”, is how one resident described the groundbreaking ceremony at Glentarkie, Boggabri’s Home for the Aged.

Glentarkie provides affordable accommodation in a caring little community and is a good transition for residents who need to downscale from a larger home while still allowing them to maintain their independence.

The current nine units were built on donated land in the early 1970s with funds raised by the community.

“Boggabri Coal was approached by the operators of Glentarkie in 2023 to fund the development of a master plan for an extension at Glentarkie,” Boggabri Coal’s deputy general manager Stewart Dunlop said.

“As discussions evolved around the long-term plan, we identified an opportunity for us to play a larger part by funding and building an additional nine units.

“We developed a proposal to approach Narrabri Shire council to see if they would be willing to accept the nine units as fulfilment of our housing commitment in Boggabri.”

The council was supportive and a collaborative design with the Glentarkie and local architects Greg Hill Associates was drawn up.

In June 2023, draft plans were put on public display to build nine extra units, plus extras such as white goods, associated landscape, gardens, roads, and fences.

All necessary approvals were secured and construction has now commenced with completion due July 2025.

“We appreciate the support of Boggabri Coal, and the Narrabri Shire Council, we couldn’t have done it without them”, Ron Boxsell said.

Boggabri Coal has said that they wish to leave a legacy in Boggabri, which gives back to all members of the community.

After the formalities a delicious cake was shared by those present.
