McDonalds Fashions has dressed generations of families in the Narrabri district and will continue to do so as the Maitland Street business continues under the ownership of Elizabeth and Chris Shepherdson.
John McDonald, known to many in the community for his long involvement and ownership of the family-owned business, officially handed the keys of the retail store to his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Chris, marking the third generation of McDonald family ownership.
McDonalds Fashions has enjoyed a strong presence in Narrabri’s central business district for many decades after it was started by the late Gordon McDonald in 1947, then operating from 103 Maitland Street.
John worked with the family business from a young age, working alongside his father Gordon and mother Joan, and at 18-years-old had a share in the business.
Fast forward more than 50 years, and the McDonald name will proudly continue with Elizabeth and Chris at the helm.
“I’m really excited that the business is going to be part of the third generation, being my daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Chris Shepherdson,” John said.
John paid tribute to the community for its continued support of the business, as well as the great staff who have worked for the McDonald family.
“I personally would like to say a big thank you to the loyal and wonderful staff and good friends that have supported us.
“We have been grateful to be allowed to be of service to the community of Narrabri and district.”
The change of ownership has also marked the retirement of Gail Smith after 24 years’ service to the business. John thanked Gail for her support across the years.
“We are retiring to Narrabri. We have no plans on leaving,” John said.
John will still be seen at the business from time to time, supporting Elizabeth and Chris, floating in and out of the store just as his father Gordon did when he stepped down from the family-owned store.
“It’s been my life for many years,” John said.
“I’ll still be in and out, seeing what’s new and exciting in store.
“I wish Elizabeth and Chris every success in continuing the McDonald name and association with the retail industry.”
The change in ownership marks a new era for the business, and with it Elizabeth and Chris hope to bring new ideas and products while keeping the known and trusted brands that McDonalds Fashions has in store.
Prior to taking ownership of the business, Elizabeth and Chris worked in health services. Elizabeth is also a qualified theatrical make-up artist and was trained in Los Angeles before returning to Narrabri. Chris’ involvement in the business brings with it another well-known Narrabri name, with generations of the Shepherdson family calling the town home.
Elizabeth and Chris have made Narrabri their home with their three sons.
“I’m looking forward to continuing the great service which people know McDonalds Fashions for,” Elizabeth said.
“We are also excited to welcome new customers to see what is on offer.”
Elizabeth has fond memories of spending time in the family business after school and has welcomed the opportunity to add to the business.
“I’m excited to see what the future brings,” Elizabeth said.
“I believe in the future of Narrabri and keeping Narrabri retail strong.”
