The Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s 2024/25 season fours competition got underway on Saturday and two teams qualified for the final.

The four teams involved were the only teams to have entered the annual competition, which meant the first-round games were both semi-finals.

The team of Helen Woodward, Ronnie Dewar, Debbie Gleeson and Lorraine Scott defeated the team of Janet Coleman, Glennis Godden, Cindy Neil (who was a sub for Rhonda Fitzgerald) and Lyn Tuckey 23-15.

The other match saw the team of Janice Foxe, Rebecca Taylor, Eva Sadler and Lisa Pillar beat the team of Dawn Armstrong, Val Falkiner (who was a sub for Kay Carolan), Cecile and Di Chessells 25-19.

Foxe, Taylor, Sadler and Pillar led 19 shots to 11 after 15 ends in their game. Armstrong, Falkiner, Cecile and Chessells were then holding shot on the 16th when Pillar bowled a heavier bowl to remove their bowls, but would instead remove her own bowl to go down six shots.

That made the score 19-17, and it became 19-all after the 17th end as Armstrong, Falkiner, Cecile and Chessells scored a two to equalise.

Foxe, Taylor, Sadler and Pillar then regrouped and won three of the final four ends to prevail 25-19.

In the other semi-final, Woodward, Dewar, Gleeson and Scott claimed five of the first seven ends to establish a 10-3 lead.

Coleman, Godden, Neil and Lyn Tuckey fought back to trail 11-7 after 10 ends and 16-14 after 16 ends, but Woodward, Dewar, Gleeson and Scott won four of the final five ends to score a 23-15 victory.

The two semi-final winners will now meet in the final on Saturday, April 5.

Social bowls was played at Narrabri Bowling Club last Thursday.

Val Falkiner, Tony Redman and Cecile beat Trish Allison, Di Chessells and Lyn Tuckey 21-9, Eva Sadler played swinging lead and with Helen Woodward and Stuart Coleman beat Keith Stoltenberg and Ronnie Dewar 27-9, and Dawn Armstrong and Doug Mackereth defeated Janet Coleman and Glennis Godden 17-12.

In the men’s competition, the first semi-final of the super veteran singles competition was played last Thursday morning. Len Ryan defeated Laurie Gilbert 25 shots to 22 to advance to the decider.

Gilbert led 19-14 after 20 ends, but Ryan then won the next five ends a combined nine shots to nothing to go ahead 23-19.

It became a one-point ball game when Gilbert scored three shots on the 26th end to make the score 23-22, but Ryan held strong and won the next two ends to prevail 25-22.

The other super veteran singles semi-final will be played on Saturday, March 29, from 9.30am between Bruce Tomlinson and Tony Redman.
