Narrabri Shire Council will offer a reward for information that leads to the successful prosecution of vandals targeting roadside signs between Wee Waa and Rowena.
Increased vandalism has been reported in the area, proving costly to council.
Mayor Darrell Tiemens presented a mayoral minute at last week’s council meeting, seeking support from elected members for a $2000 reward.
“This behaviour is not only reckless and costly, but also poses significant safety risks to local motorists, particularly in rural areas where signage is critical for navigation and traffic safety,” Cr Tiemens said.
“Council officers have reported repeated damage to signs, including deliberate removal and defacement—presumably by offenders in vehicles.”
Cr Tiemens said the cost of replacing or repairing each sign often runs into the hundreds of dollars.
“More importantly, the ongoing disruption and inconvenience caused to residents, contractors, and visitors is simply unacceptable,” Cr Tiemens said.
“Council is rightly angry about this senseless destruction of public infrastructure.
“To demonstrate our firm position on this matter, I recommend that council offer a reward of $2000 for information leading to the successful prosecution of those responsible for this vandalism.
“It is important we send a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated, and that we will pursue all avenues to hold offenders accountable.
“This reward will be sourced from within current budget, Roads Management.”
The mayoral minute, moved by Cr Tiemens, was unanimously supported by councillors.
